WHAT STANDARDS SHOULD REPAIR MORTAR BE USED IN INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS?
In infrastructure projects such as bridges, factories, airports, or workshops - quick, effective and sustainable repairs are required to ensure safety and not interrupt operations. Therefore, specialized repair mortars need to meet strict technical standards, different from conventional mortars in civil use.
Below are the core standards that a quality repair mortar must have to be applied in infrastructure projects:
🔶 1. High compressive strength
Ensures the same or higher load-bearing capacity than old concrete.
Usually requires 40 MPa or more after 28 days, or may be higher depending on the type of use (roadbed, foundation, bridge girder, etc.).
🔶 2. Outstanding adhesion
The mortar must bond well to old concrete or metal surfaces (reinforced steel).
Adhesion standards are usually from 1.5 - 2.5 MPa or more, helping to prevent peeling and cracking of mortar feet.
🔶 3. Flexible setting time
For emergency repair projects (airports, factories, etc.), mortar needs to harden quickly, reaching strength within 1 - 3 hours.
However, it still requires enough construction time to roll and finish the surface.
🔶 4. No shrinkage, limited cracking
Low shrinkage content helps the mortar not crack after curing, ensuring tightness and longevity of the project.
🔶 5. Waterproof and weatherproof
Must be able to withstand water, high humidity and temperature changes when used outdoors or in flooded areas.
Some lines also require resistance to mild chemicals (acids, oils, greases, etc.).
🔶 6. Easy to apply – suitable for the field
Can be applied by hand, trowel, pump or molding, depending on the scale of the project.
The mortar does not separate water, does not settle and can be applied in thick layers (a few centimeters to a few tens of centimeters/layer).
🔍 Standards applied in Vietnam and internationally:
Some applied standards include:
TCVN 8828:2011 - Repair mortar for concrete
ASTM C928 - Fast-setting repair mortar
EN 1504-3 - Products and systems for repairing concrete structures
✅ Estorpatch - High-strength repair mortar provided by Okasan Livic Vietnam
Estorpatch is a product that meets all of the above criteria, is manufactured using Japanese technology and is being applied in many practical projects such as:
Repairing internal roads in food factories
Reinforcing urban sewer panels
Treating cracks and local damage in industrial floor structures
